Assistant Professor
Physics
Dr. Arindam Sarkar is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics.
His academic and research work is focused on theoretical condensed matter physics, with particular emphasis on strongly correlated transition metal oxides and layered compounds.
His research investigates the complex interplay between charge, spin, orbital and structural degrees of freedom and their connection to charge ordering, spin ordering, orbital ordering, metal-insulator transitions, ferroelectricity and multiferroicity.

Research Interests
- First principle investigation of structural, electronic, magnetic and multiferroic behaviour of various layered compounds.
- Study of thermophysical and optoelectronic properties of perovskites and double perovskite compounds with electron, hole doping and oxygen non-stoichiometry.
- Investigation of transition metal oxide monolayer and type-III multiferroic compounds.
Research Summary
Complex interplay between charge, spin, orbital and structural degrees of freedom in strongly correlated transition metal oxides leads to various exotic physical behavior such as charge ordering, charge disproportionation, metal to insulator transition, spin ordering, orbital ordering, high temperature superconductivity, magnetoresistance, ferroelectricity and multiferroicity.
As a result they are extremely useful in various technological applications. My work is focused on to understand how these complex physical processes play out, giving rise to charge ordering, charge disproportionation, orbital ordering, noncolinear spin ordering, metal to insulator transition, ferroelectricity and multiferroicity etc.
Such properties can be exploited in various novel technological applications, such as electronic sensors, memory devices, ultrafast switching device and spintronics.
